[CPWG] Some Useful Doc about Decentralized DNS

Thank you again for the nice set of mails on this thread.

There are twin challenges in the discussion. I am expressing them as follows to generate more thought.

#1: End - User :

The term points at a consumer rather than a customer. We progress to make them voice their needs. End-user computing refers to systems in which non-programmers can create working applications. In my humble opinion, code segments are happening at frantic pace in this segment but with unbelievable number of built-in hazards.

It takes 10 years to learn programming. End - User are not really in this category of learners. Code patches by "hear - say' is a typical practice. At times it is quite alarming to my mind.

Hence, we prefer "localization" that has a way of connecting to non-local. The terminology may please be excused for the time being. Any inconvenience caused is regretted.

Edge Computing is an emerging solution in its nascency.

#2: Edge Computing

Edge computing is a distributed computing paradigm that brings computation and data storage closer to the sources of data. This is expected to improve response times and save bandwidth. This is the kind of "Localization" that is aimed at.

It is presently more than a tight rope walk to keep some hazards "local".

I refrain from expanding DNS as Domain Name System that doubles up as Domain Name Server in this end - user segment.

Your thoughts..

Sincerely,

Gopal T V

Thank you David,

Note that I've attached the local use to IOT and the devices that are in most cases used locally. I also think that the use of DNS based on Blockchain will be useful for CCTLD.

For the rest of your email I totally agree with you and the point you have mentioned is one of the reason that push me to start this discussion, and we are here to learn from each others how usel are this claimed new ("old" to repeat the term used by Sebastian during CPWG call ) technologies.

Friendly regards
Chokri

Hi Chokri,

Can you please expand on the claim "seems to be more efficient for a local use"?

End users are accustomed to decades of false claims from emerging technologies. The trade off for losing a rules based DNS policy system to anonymous decentralized control for unspecified benefits reminds me of the inflated claims of unspecified future benefits claimed in the .ORG discussion. Decentralized technology is not a bad thing, as long as accountable human based policy is not affected.

Cheers,
David

Dear Mackey and Friends,
Decentralized DNS are facing a lot of challenges in addition of DNS abuse issues and the misplaced use of Blockchain technology by Cybercriminal <https://www.digitalshadows.com/blog-and-research/how-cybercriminals-are-using-blockchain-dns-from-the-market-to-the-bazar/> :

  * First of all they have to convince users that are really decentralized system since they are basically using ICANN infrastructure,
  * Decentralized DNS are not currently regulated , so users rights are dictated by the firm owning the Gtld,
  * What will happen if a new gtld will be registered simultanly by ICANN registry and a Decentralize DNS firm?

but the simple Business model (no registrar no registry ) adopted by Decentralized DNS attracts users and seems to be more efficient for a local use particularly with the emergence of IOT (25-50 billions devices if we trust some estimation) .

Thank you dear friends for your interest and looking forward to continuing the discussion about this topic.

Chokri

I'd love to hear about how decentralized DNS is going to handle the operational problem of DNS abuse.

We're probably at the point where we shouldn't automatically trust a new technology without understanding the social harm that comes with it.
