[gnso-rds-pdp-wg] Dangers of public whois

I think this leads back to the initial question:

What information _needs_ to be public to allow the functionality of the
domain name? This is a question completely independant of what people
can use the data for and whether it is beneficial to have this data public.

For some of the thin data, the data has to be public to ensure the
domain name works.

But even then, if you register a domain name only to hold it as a nest
egg for a rainy day and do not intend to activate it, even that need to
publicise the most basic information like nameservers goes away.

As for the odd logic proposed by some that the property of privacy is transitive (i.e. Because “thin data” can be used to link/point/discover other data then “thin data” equals “personal data”) I just don’t buy it.
