Thanks to Marie and Philippe for some refining of what I intended. I'm taking Philippe's advice against over-engineering and am thinking maybe the answer to Q#6 could be used to gauge what I'm after; someone having a good ear for the political nuances in the GAC councils and their use to nudge GNSO interactions.

Also agree with Carlton’s and Marie’s notes re some “diplomatic” ability to explain to people with a variety of administering backgrounds how the PDP works and how it affects ICANN ‘at large’ (no pun), this is how I read #6 even if GAC is not mentioned: “please rate candidates' effectiveness and experience at diplomatic, accurate and effective communication.”, so no strong opinion for changing anything in that respect lest we over-engineer this, but colleagues may think differently.

Hopefully all of these will make it easier to map/assess the elements provided in the application form.

I agree with Philippe's point; could we capture it this way in q5:

(Makes it clear we’re not looking for someone who just sits in the room scrolling through social media ;-) ).

And in q 8:

8. Based on the application materials and your own knowledge about the candidates, please rate the candidates' effectiveness and experience at working with colleagues in policy development work and GAC members.

(It could also be working with colleagues and GAC members in policy development work, but I’m conscious of the GNSO’s mandate).

I also agree with Carlton, per “I guess the GAC liaison should possess acute listening/decoding skills for the political nuances that comes with GAC politics and how they might impact the larger ICANN policy-making infrastructure.  Not sure how you would telegraph that in a question”. I think that’s key; this isn’t just “what do you know about the GNSO”, it’s “can you explain that – politely & succinctly – to government reps who have differing languages, cultures & priorities, and can you then condense and explain GAC members’ views to the GNSO, to create the bridge to common ground”. (Basic superhero stuff, right Julf?) .

Thanks for your response. I believe the survey was originally designed to reflect the criteria used in the call for volunteers, which is also focused more heavily on GNSO/PDP knowledge than GAC knowledge, as these are the criteria the SSC is expected to apply in evaluating applications.

In going back to the call for volunteers and application form, I did notice that there is a question in the application form that is not reflected in the survey: " Please describe your familiarity with GAC processes, including GAC engagement in GNSO policy development." Would it be helpful to add a question to the survey that says something like "Based on the application materials and your own knowledge about the candidates, please rate the candidates' familiarity with GAC processes, including GAC engagement in GNSO policy development." ?

For question 5, would it be clearer to add the following text proposed in parenthesis: "Based on the application materials and your own knowledge about the candidates, please rate the candidates' availability to participate in GAC meetings during the course of ICANN meetings (in person, if physical meetings are held, or otherwise remotely) and also, where applicable, intersessional meetings." ?

    A couple of thoughts:

    - there's a lot of emphasis on the PDP (which is indeed a pre-requisite) but only 1 question out of 6 mentions the GAC; I understand from last week's call that being a bit familiar with how governments work or somewhat involved already (eg national coord, network of contacts etc.) may also help.

    - Also noted that #5 (my reading at least) seems like F2F rather than covid crisis/virtual mode.

    Thanks for reviewing the poll and for your input on the format. I took a look to see if SurveyMonkey allows for this type of weighting, and unfortunately, it doesn't seem to support capturing that additional layer or nuance quantitatively. There is an open text box at the end of the survey, however, so if members wanted to do so, they could comment on their confidence in their responses, based on their own level or knowledge of the candidate and/or the level of detail that the application materials provide. This could be taken into account qualitatively as the Working Group discusses the candidates and reviews the poll responses. It is also possible to add additional text boxes if that would be helpful.

        each question. There might be a question where I have a very strong view/opinion, and
