Dear Improvements Taskforce members,

today, I attended a Webinar about outreach, presented to Chairs of SO/ACs.
Since outreach is something which we are currently working on, please
find enclosed, the set of slides which I forward with permission from
Kurt Pritz.
You will see that, although it is still early days (and the PPT is just
a first attempt at maturing a draft proposal) ICANN is starting to take
outreach very seriously indeed.
During the call, the subject of ICANN Academy was mentioned and I was
asked to expand on it. I therefore explained its birth during the
At-Large Improvements process (with its roots even earlier than that),
its historical advance over the summer (involving Filiz Yilmaz) and the
creation of an ad-hoc working group to take the first draft proposal
forward to a full proposal asking for funding, with a goal to implement
a first test run during the Toronto meeting.

Although there is serious interest to expand the Academy to cover all of
ICANN, I have realised how little other communities/constituencies have
thought about the matter so far. We might be able to share some of our
ongoing capacity building process based on our knowledge acquired in the
AFRALO capacity building. I just want you to know how pioneering this
is, and that our two parallel tracks, the Academy on one hand and the
capacity building on the other, need to be fully documented as such
records are likely to be read outside of our community too, in the very
near future.
