[IPC-GNSO] INTA New gTLD Cost Impact Study Results

I attach copies of the INTA New gTLD Cost Impact Survey, the Summary Slides Lori Schulman presented to the CCT Review Team, and a slide summary of Talking Points gleaned from the Survey and results.

With thanks to Lori Schulman for pulling this all together, along with the members of INTA's New gTLD Registry Issues & Metrics Subcommittee and the Impact Study Committee.   While important, we believe this is only the first step in understanding and being able to address the burden the New gTLD program places on trademark owners and online users.

Subject: New gTLD Impact Study Results

Dear Internet Committee Leadership,

The results of INTA's New TLD Impact Study have been compiled and reviewed by various representatives of the Internet and Impact Study Committees. INTA has agreed to share the data with ICANN's Consumer Choice Competition and Trust Review Team (CCT-RT) on today's plenary call.  INTA presented preliminary results at the CCT-RT meeting at ICANN58 in Copenhagen. The data that was shared at that time was focused on who participated and the overall response rate including the fact that while 93 INTA regular members entered the survey only 33 ended up completing it by the deadline. This was due to the complexity of the questions and the fact that brand owners do not typically analyze costs in the manner that was deemed necessary for the study.  Nonetheless, the data that was provided is thoughtful and provides a good snapshot of the effects of the new TLD program on trademark owners.  We should interpret the results as indicating a trend not the trend itself.

I am including a single slide suggesting the high level messaging on which we should focus.  These talking points have been reviewed by the Internet and Impact Studies committees and approved by INTA Communications.  As we digest the information, we may adjust the messaging accordingly.  If upon review of the study there are other points that you think INTA should be emphasizing, please let me know.

Feel free to distribute to your committees with a hearty thank you for helping to get the word out, filling out the surveys and assisting with this critical advocacy piece.  A special thank you to Michael Graham and his subcommittee for doing the heavy lift on this project.
