Subject: Hold the date - October 7, Security and Stability Advisory
Committee meeting related to wild cards in the DNS

On October 7, the Security and Stability Advisory Committee of ICANN, chaired by Steve Crocker, will hold a meeting, open to the public, at CSIS in Washington, D.C. to hear from different perspectives related to the wild card introduction in the .com and .net zones. The meeting will be webcast, and there will be seating for 200 attendees. A few of the folks on this list and I have volunteered to do some outreach so that both the "usual, and the "non usual" ICANN community is aware of the meeting.

Please hold the date now, and stay tuned for the actual advisory to be posted by ICANN.

You may not think that you are affected. There are many implications of wild cards, which the IAB statements, and the ICANN SECSAC statements begin to explore. Please take this opportunity to learn more about the issue and its impact on the stability and predictability of the DNS/Internet.

Many of you are following the issue now on various lists. the link below is a good backgrounder.

If you have questions, or you are interested in an "English language version" of why this should be of interest to you,
you can call me at

You can find a useful backgrounder at http://www.packet-pushers.net/tld-wildcards/ that I found useful, personally, as a sort of summary of some of the questions and issues.
