Dear Jonathan,

my understanding of the technology leads me to believe that YouTube
indeed has a Quality of Service algorithm that lowers the bitrate when
it detects lower speed connections, thus, as you said, the resolution of
the video is lowered. Add with this, some caching taking place at your
ISP, which is probable, you've got a more stable connection through YT.
Part of the reason why it is very hard for other video delivery services
to compete on quality with YT.
